OUR OPEN HOUSE WAS A SUCCESS!
Our theme this evening was “Hobbies” which was well received. We
had six guests – some of whom met their fears head-on and
participated in our Table Topics session. In fact one guest
Azeem came through with a great on-the-spot joke for us to serve
as Jokemaster! Bravo Azeem
Some comments included: “Fun meeting with lots of well-prepared
participants” – “Loved the Chairman’s questions about how we
pick our hobbies.” – “Great presentation at the refreshments
table”.
With a “whack” of the gavel by Dave A. we got our Open House
Meeting off to a good start.
President Karen A. was Chairman for this evening and introduced
our theme by commenting that the process of finding one’s
hobbies can be challenging and fun.
The ever-competent Karen A. played double duty and also acted as
our Wordsmith for the evening. The word for the evening
“passion” tied in quite nicely to the theme.
Barbara M. as Wizardress of Ah’s and is no stranger to this role
and managed to give our piggy-bank a decent meal.
Our Inspirator Jan F. is our man of many hobbies and many
passions. This evening he delivered a passionate inspiration
regarding the African continent, a passion that he has spoken
about often.
Table Topics Master Jane A. provided an excellent introduction
of the role and how the process would work, something that
definitely benefited our guests. The Table Topics session was
very well run with questions aligned with the evening theme of
hobbies.
A recuperating Diane C. was Table Topics Evaluator and she was
just as effective an evaluator sitting down as standing up.
Stressing that her role, as with any evaluator, “is the
evaluator’s opinion”.
It was so nice to see Jan K. back and filling the role as Timer
– her timekeeping was sharp and punctual!
Christina R. as Toastmaster asked us to raise our glasses in a
toast – “To the gift that is our hobby”. Christina has a style
and warmth that sets people at ease; this was evident when she
introduced our speakers and the projects they were working on.
The Icebreaker Speech is just what it says – it gets our feet
wet – and Robert G. gave a fantastic and exciting account of his
travels. Looking forward to Part 2 Robert!
Dave A. gave an excellent, in-depth speech on dreams, the
chemical compositions required for dreams, and alluded to their
meaning. He delivered it with his infamous sense of humour,
which kept everyone engaged.
Barbara M. evaluated Robert’s speech using her hands, body
language, pitch and volume effectively.
Neville K. a guest and former member of Toastmasters 1085
evaluated Dave’s speech – his suggestions were solid, paced well
and had good use of body language.
Thanks to the combined efforts of Karen A., Christina R., Dave
A. and Jane A. for refreshments!
Well it went off without a hitch! Congratulations to Dave A.
placing 1st and Barbara M. placing 2nd in Tabletopics – well
done! Although Jan F. was the only contestant in the speech
contest, he certainly didn’t let us down in the humor department
– in my mind Jan would have been first with this competition!
Thank you to all participants, judges, volunteers, and for the
goodies on the refreshment table – it made for an entertaining
evening.
Congratulations to our winners:
Let's support them as they move on to the Area Contest:

Our next Toastmasters meeting will on October 6, at 7:15pm in
our regular location. Come join us in "Learning Through Fun and
Friendship".
