It was such a lovely spring evening and perfect for the
induction of two new members into our close. Kate E. warmly
welcomed Barbara M. and Steve Z.
As Chairman, Li-Ying related to the theme “cuisine” with rich
images and witty food-based metaphors. Well-done Li-Ying.
Christina R. “infused” us (excellent word) with doing
double-duty as Wordsmith and Wizardress of Ahs. I guess since
the piggy was recently emptied she applied her wizardry skills
casting a spell over all of us. I was surprised when she managed
to catch me with over 5 infractions!
Jan F. as Inspirator is always an interesting and informative
speaker – I found it ingenious with some of the ways in which
Africa is manipulating solar energy to help in food production.
Our Jokemaster, David J. has a great presence and wonderful
voice – he used a great link to the theme – a fun cautionary
joke about a not-so-discounted breakfast.
And of course our red hot pepper of a Timer, Diane C. who had a
very good explanation of her role tied cleverly to the theme.
Table Topics Master, Susan P. was composed at the lectern and
gave good instruction to the Timer. She infused us with good use
of humour – making this part of the evening relaxed and
enjoyable. She got the following comments:
Jan K. said if she was on death row she would order 5 toasted
Denver sandwiches – now there’s a woman who knows what she
likes!
If Atta E had a chance to invite three people to a dinner party
and serve them anything he liked -- he humourously said it would
be three famous dead people because he didn’t know how to cook!
As a first-time participant, Barbara M. confidently said India
would be the country she would take cooking lessons from -- as
she aspires to cook Indian food like her mother-in-law. Don’t we
all!!
Delene B. declared that her personality is more of a spicy salsa
variety when asked to choose between spicy salsa or a smooth
creamy sauce.
When given a choice David J. said that since he doesn’t “have a
relationship with food that leads to unwanted weight gain” there
are no bad foods just bad drinks!
Steve Z.’s most memorable dining memory was at the North Shore
restaurant “The Salmon House”. Kudos Steve, you used the word of
the evening too!
Our Table Topic Evaluator Jane A. was very appreciative of all
the participants – encouraged our newest members with great
positive vibes -- gave good constructive suggestions and threw
in some humour too!
I was impressed with Jennifer S.’s ice-breaker speech -- she
USED NO NOTES! With poise and a wonderful understated sense of
humour, Jennifer said she wasn’t going to dish out any dirt. But
much to the delight of her audience the occasional tit-bit did
slip through.
Thanks to Diane C. who doubled up as Speech Evaluator! She
showed her appreciation of Jennifer’s word use and imagery – I
liked her image of “opening Pandora’s Box” with regard to the
juicy anecdotes Jennifer so graciously let slip. Diane
acknowledged that when a speaker shares their strengths and
weaknesses, we see them as a whole person and are drawn closer
to them.
Our Club Election’s part of the evening was run by another
fill-in hero Jan K. Jan stepped in to take over running the
election in the absence of Acting Past President, Jill M. Jan
ran a great and speedy election!
As first-time General Evaluator, Delene B. was calm and
presented a very poised manner up at the lectern – her voice is
clear and pleasant to listen to – how do you manage it? Delene
warmly taught each participant things to work on while
positively appraising performances within the parameters of
his/her specific role.
Don’t forget our next Toastmasters will be a dinner meeting on
Monday, April 28th, at Cheers Restaurant in North Vancouver and
begins at 6:30 pm. Come join us in "Learning Through Fun and
Friendship".
