What an exhilarating feeling to read all the Highlights that
made this meeting memorable. Thank you to everyone who took the
time to contribute these for us.
Jim Sinclair spoke for everyone when he opened his General
Evaluation with: “Ten of the sixteen members and guests
attending the meeting arrived before 7 pm, which was fifteen
minutes ahead of schedule. It’s obvious that nobody is being
dragged here – we are here because we are excited to be here.”
Jim’s evaluation was a very popular Highlight for many. The
comments were as follows:
“Jim Sinclair’s evaluation was fun, and full of helpful
comments.” “He made us laugh.” “Jim’s sense of humour was
great!” When he was appreciating Elma’s Word of the Week,
‘hubris’, he jokingly quipped that he had thought the hubris was
“what was growing beside his rhododendron!” And, regarding
Omar’s Toast: “How can a member of this club who’s from
Winnipeg, Sask. (like he is) not enjoy a Toast that includes the
general strike (in the 30s) and Tommy Douglas??”
Don Ekroth and Omar Hung also received numerous accolades:
Don for “his strong leadership” as Chairman. “Enjoyed Don’s
introduction to History (the theme), and especially the quotes”.
Two of these quotes were: Churchill’s ‘History is just one damn
thing after another.” And Tolstoy’s “Happy people have no
history.” “Don created a light, happy atmosphere with his little
comments” (when bridging between Speakers, and just plain
enjoying himself).
Omar was praised for “his engaging ability as a Toastmaster”,
And also for “His introduction to history, with a focus on
Canadian history. This was especially marveled at because the
place in which he grew up and was originally educated was
Taiwan.” He left a lasting impression with “We are all moving
forward, but leaving footprints behind.”
In the limelight, also, were both of the Speakers, who were
described as “interesting, educators who were passionate and
persuasive about their topics”:
Karen Arnold was convincing us to eat better sugar alternatives
(unpasturized honey, unrefined cane juice powder, or stevia),
rather than refined white sugar which she so vividly described
as ‘white death”. After which Parvaneh Bahrami was convincing us
of the many benefits of the art of acupuncture. Testimonials
from her own patients, described that not only did the needles
help their ailments, but also many of them found themselves more
relaxed or more energized from the experience.
This whole meeting was an education for us, not only to further
our personal growth in communication and leadership skills, but
also we learned, through the many speeches and roles, a lot more
about each other, and about “tidbits of history from other parts
of the world”.
We had “a great showing of guests!” We Inducted a brand new
member, Louise Williams, who won the Best Table Topic Ribbon,
and two of our guests have applied for membership! We hope to
Induct them next week
The theme for next week’s meeting will be “Wisdom”. Everyone is
welcome to come.
