SUMMER BREAK
HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

June 11th, 2007

“The humour was exceptional tonight and really gave a feeling of connectedness. Thank you.” “This was the most enjoyable meeting yet – I never stopped laughing.” “We were not spoiled by the number of members and guests, yet it was a very warm meeting.” “Only 18 attendees tonight! After several weeks of ‘full houses’ it is funny to think of 18 as a small crowd when actually it is an excellent number. That was proven tonight.” “The Theme (The Magic of Colours) was so inspirational!” “Truly a ‘rainbow’ of a meeting!” “Pam, in the Chairman role, brings lots of positive energy. Her meetings are very smooth.” “Interesting responses to her introductory question: ‘What is your favorite colour, and why?”

“Christine had a plethora of colourful phrases and descriptions to work with throughout this meeting, and didn’t miss even one of them in her Wordsmith report. I found it most interesting that the Word she chose for us to use is pronounced with the emphasis on the ‘pleth’ with the ‘ora’ petering out: (pleth’ ora). After all these years I will now start using it correctly! Thank you for the education, Christine.” “I found this word well-explained and easy to use.”

“I enjoyed Pam’s apt ad-libbing for her introduction for Jim.” “Loved Jim’s fabulously humorous and emphatic introduction to his role.” “He brought a little life into what could be a mundane role.” “He gave the best introduction for Wizard of Ah’s I have ever heard.” “He ‘callously’ (his words) charged us for our ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ after putting on a funny show depicting these infractions.”

“Delene’s Inspiration was a Highlight for me!” “Her lyricism is always so beautiful. She is a natural poet.” “Appreciated her necessary encouragement to us not to pack away our travel revelations; but rather to keep them out as touchstones and reminders of those things we need to / can change in our lives.” “’After a trip don’t just package away your experiences and memories in a box and tuck them away.’ That is exactly what I used to do, but now I won’t, thanks to this Inspiration.”

“A good laugh; a good Joke.” “Bob’s scintillating humour was sprinkled liberally throughout his personal golfing joke!” “Some of the best jokes are personal stories and this one was no exception. My goodness … who would want a handicap for anything … it would certainly make it more difficult to play golf … wouldn’t it?”

“First-time Timer, Atta, really kept everyone on his / her toes, not missing a beat with the lights or the bell! The time was very well reported, as well.” “He even stayed ‘on theme’ by using ‘colours’ in the introduction of his role!”

“Elena arrived at the meeting without a role, took a look at the Agenda and noticed no one was down to Introduce the Chairman. She slipped in to do it so easily, and unasked, that no one was even aware that it hadn’t been planned! That’s the sign of a veteran Toastmaster!”

“Loved the Table Topics – colours with the associations they bring up – fun, and less daunting!” “A very successful Table Topics session. Colours made a surprisingly inspirational topic.” “I really enjoyed this session. Hilary came up with the wonderful idea of having different colours as the topics.” “She provided a solid introduction to her session and guided participants through interesting and memory-provoking questions that were answerable by all!” “She was excellent in her bridging and had some fun ways of introducing the colours.” Hilary on Hilary: “I had fun doing this session – my most relaxed yet. I always enjoy the new members’ speeches as they inspire me.” “Loved the off-topic speeches! We are all so sly at changing topics – the sign of true diplomats!” “Great Table Topic speeches by pretty much everyone. Standouts for me included Sutomi, Christine and Jim.” “Dave A.’s speech was so well organized – an inspiration to the new members!” “Especially liked Christine’s speech on the colour pink and her imagery of swatches of material.” Congratulations to Christine – this speech won her the coveted Best Table Topic ribbon … once again smiley
“Dave F. had some excellent catches and made some very good individually-tailored suggestions to each of the TableTopic participants in his role (for the very first time) as Table Topics Evaluator. As always, his humour made all of us laugh!smiley” “For the first time evaluating these speeches he used the sandwich technique very very well … especially with Christine - he was very careful and yet still got his suggestion across.” “Very gracious criticism of Christine’s speech. I call it nepotism!” Very effective, fun, evaluation by the Table Topics Evaluator for his wife smiley” “Unusual for a first-timer to do such a perfect ‘plus – suggestion – plus’ evaluation for every single speaker. Kudos to Dave.”
“’Close your eyes and imagine a world without colour.’ An excellent Toast by Li Ying, followed by a very well organized and well run Speech Session.”

“I appreciated Neville giving the newer members a glimpse of the Toastmaster scene behind the actual club meetings. He described some of the opportunities that clubs and individual members can take advantage of if that is their desire.” “Great opening for Neville’s Evaluation, Jill! ‘Something I didn’t like about this …’ and then she really turned it into something positive!” “I enjoyed her excellent and personal feedback for his speech.” “I thought her evaluation of Neville’s Area Governor report was quite masterful, even having time to incorporate a ‘thank you’ to him for tackling a large and time-consuming role for the year.”

“Really enjoyed Jessica’s inaugural speech. Confident and humorous.” “Jessica’s first speech was great! It was a beautiful story presented with a sense of humour.” “It was filled with powerful imagery and analogies between music and her medical studies. Very well prepared and her bridging between the two was powerful!” “One memorable excerpt for me was ‘Trust that the constants of life are enough to keep your feet on the ground.’” “A Speaker never knows what to expect from an Evaluator and this can put anyone a little on edge – especially a first-time Speaker, but the first words Kate spoke would have put Jessica immediately at ease. What a relief! Everyone benefits from an opening like this.” “Her evaluation of Jessica was a pleasure to hear; very positive.” “She does a fantastic job. Her gestures were expressive, she covers the whole, but has analyzed the speech.” “As always, very supportive and good advice delivered in a positive fashion.”

“Dave Stewart’s dramatic re-shuffling of the General Evaluation report was fantastic and unexpected: a ‘mixed up, random report’!” “He is energetic, innovative, and is generous in his praise. Loved his humorous gestures – especially ‘the waste basket gambit! This guy wasn’t taking any paper home.” “He constantly adds new tools to our collective evaluation ’tool kit’; thanks for the novel approach tonight, Dave smiley” “His evaluation was a great way to finish off the year! His selection of a humorous and off-beat delivery (and order!) was characteristic of his outside-the-box thinking. As usual, his warmth embraced us, just as his observations will improve us! Thanks, Dave! smiley

This Toastmaster year could be summed up by using our motto: ‘Learning through Fun and Friendship.’ Every single meeting we learned something new, either about ourselves, about others, about how to communicate or lead better, or all of the above. Every single meeting we felt connected to an interesting, fun-loving, warmhearted group of people. No matter how we felt before going to a meeting, we invariably felt accepted, encouraged, and lighthearted when we left.

This was the last formal meeting before our Summer Break. Our Wind-Up Party will be Monday June 25th at Pam’s (604-986-1025 Pam Elliott) By the way, the number for the Westview Exit off the Upper Levels is #17. Please let Pam know if you would like to come and we somehow missed you – all former members are most welcome to come renew old friendships and join in the fun.

Wishing you All a very happy summer. We will look forward to seeing you at our first meeting on Monday September 10th. Happy Holidays. smiley

PS We are compiling a list of clubs that will be open over the summer on the North Shore and will send them to you as soon as we have all of their responses.
