HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

June 4th, 2007

“What a remarkable, large turnout, especially of Guests. I thought the meeting was wonderful; enjoyed it very much! We all participated well.” “Great energy and interesting topics. I was very tired tonight and almost didn’t come but I felt energized by the end of the evening.”

“Jan’s professional, yet relaxed, way of introducing the Chairman helped to set the tone from the very beginning.” “He gave us a refreshing and a nice start to the meeting.” “His always present sense of humour was evident once again, this time when he introduced Karen who was Chairman for the first time. This was ‘just what the doctor ordered’ to help her relax and have fun with this new role.”

“Karen was very self-assured, confident and in charge,” “conducting herself gracefully and professionally.” “Her preparation was thorough and correlated to the theme well in her introductory comments.” “Good bridging!” “Great go, Karen! Great Chairing!” “Loved Karen’s intro to the theme of ‘transformation’: We change and are forever not the same.” “Do, do, do, do, do, do …Jaws transformed her fear of the water. What an excellent example!” “Loved her ‘introduction question’ and the answers it elicited: ‘What animal would you like to transform into?’.”

“The Induction was handled smoothly and professionally.” “We’ve had Inductions weekly lately – fantastic! Two again this night!! It is really great to see the club grow.” “The Induction was full of good humour and a welcoming spirit.” “The ‘wedding’ was very touching smiley smiley” “Enjoyed Pam’s introductory comments to the Inductees, offering them mentorship, expertise, and friendship in our club and calling on them, as they gain experience, to offer the same to future members.” “Nice efficient Induction – these are important markers for club members. I’ll bet the little bit of humour helps the Inductees relax during this more formal procedure.”

“Be sure to Highlight Dave A.’s customary use of humour – this time in explaining his job as Wordsmith. I liked his well-chosen and easy-to-pronounce Word (“induce”).” “Many were induced to use it!” “His Word was so large and easy to read, and I liked his original explanation if the role.” “A very positive and personal Wordsmith Report. Some great language catches!”

“I liked Nahid’s description of her role as ‘The voice of doom!’.” “She provided clear instructions describing what she would be looking for.” “I liked her explicit examples of the kinds of things she’d penalize us for as the Wizard of Ahs and Ums.”

“What an excellent, candid, and thoughtful Inspiration by our newcomer, Bob. His use of humour was very effective, and I believe we all took away something of value and direct pertanence to the Toastmasters setting.” “It fit into our theme very well.” “It was from the heart.” “His ‘no notes’ Inspiration was very creative and very funny. Wow – looking forward to more from this guy.” “His Inspiration was amazing. Never mind that it was his first time, or that he used no notes, it would have been a very strong performance even without those added pluses, and his message to focus ‘on the door of inspiration (instead of the exit door)’ was indeed inspirational.” “Liked his story of speakers who ‘look down in desperation, up for inspiration, but not to the side for information’!” “It was wonderful – and it hit home with most of us, I’d bet. Confronting and openly talking about fear helps diffuse it.” “Wow! Both Inductees chose speaking roles this evening and performed them with aplomb! Our group just continues growing stronger.” “I admired Bob’s courage as a newly Inducted member in giving his Inspiration: not only well written and humorous, but also very well delivered.”

“An excellent, well-delivered and personal Joke shared by Jokemaster and (the other) newly Inductee, Leila.” “Good, humorous Joke obviously enjoyed by all.” “I liked her Joke! Out of the mouths of babes!”

“Neville’s explanation as Timer made me smile: ‘I’ll control you with the stop watch and advise you with the lights.’ “I liked his: ‘controlling the people with his tools’!”

“The Table Topics session was creative and original.” “Loved the fabric – a great and novel approach.” “Christine’s very original Table Topics were one of the hits of the evening: swatches of cloth to inspire ideas and memories. Her pieces of fabric elicited a wide range of creative responses: stories and philosophy from historical China, to a neighbourhood shooting witnessed by a child, to the importance of legacy.” “The topic themed with props was excellent – innovative and imaginative. Christine was very adept and professional in her command of the session. She used good bridging also. The props were used effectively and with aplomb.” “As a first time Table Topics Master her bridging was unbelievably great!” One response for the Highlights fits into both the Table Topics and formal speeches, outlining the importance of a well developed speech: “I realized the importance of making a good opening, good developing body and ending with a memorable conclusion.” “I liked the quote from someone’s speech: ‘He who dies with the most fabric wins! First time I ever heard this! Very interesting.” “Bob Chow did a great job with his Table Topic: He said ‘I’m not a fabric man.’ And then he told of how fibers hold our future.” “I thought his Table Topic speech was fantastic, talking about the fabric as a metaphor for the successful development of society.” “Friman was very good to get up right away as a first-time visitor smiley” Dave A. is always quick to come up with a good story.” “Congratulations to him for winning the ribbon for the Best Table Topic Speaker!” “The Table Topics Evaluation by Elena, a novice to the role, was thorough, natural, and incisive.” “A very positively focused, sincere evaluation for each speaker.”

“Stuart was good in his role of Toastmaster.” “I got a kick out of his effort to convince us that his Toast ‘To positive transformational effects’ just ‘rolls off the tongue’!!” “I liked Stuart’s thank you to all of us for our participation in the speech section of the meeting. It was a nice touch.”

“Thorough introduction of Dave F.’w speech – well done.” “The humour in the formal speeches of Dave F. and Atta.” “It was terrific to hear Atta’s Ice Breaker speech. We all learned more about an interesting individual with a varied background and clearly a lot to contribute to our club.” “I liked his speech – I learned a lot about him. What a colourful life!” “His speech was well internalized; he spoke from the heart.” “This Ice Breaker took us on a whirlwind of topics and places; he whetted our appetites for future speeches. I especially enjoyed the quote he used: ‘In the path of truth, there is no distinction between religion, race, men and women.” “Great speech by Dave F.” “Wonderful story, humorous and spot on.” “His sense of humour is legendary.” “…filled with humour and material of strong entertainment value. Excellent use of colourful examples in this anecdotal account of protecting his prized cherry crop.” “His wonderful word visuals, right from the start, offered us a cinematographic delight before our eyes. This, combined with his hallmark humour made this speech project a ‘cherries jubilees’ on its own. Beware, all cherry-stealing crows, of man armed with paintball gun!...!! smiley Huge success of a speech!” “Excellent – I think I will have the picture with me for a very long time.”

“Both Speech Evaluations were professional and through. Very impressive work! Congratulations to Dave S., who won the Best Evaluator ribbon smiley” “’Master of the sardonic one liner’ – Dave S.’s description of Dave F. was humouous and right on.” “He used excellent specific examples in evaluating Dave F.’s speech, and matched Dave F.’s level of humour. Thank you, both Daves, for the entertainment and belly laughs! You got the endorphins flowing!” “Li Ying’s evaluation was very precise. She always has good suggestions for improvement.” “Her evaluation of Atta was very adept at pointing out the highlights. She also provided some suggestions with good examples for all of us – ie. ‘Take a deep breath; ground yourself; then begin speaking.”

“The General Evaluation was delivered with Jim’s usual flair for the dramatic, precision, and astute observations. Excellent use of the sandwich technique.” “Jim’s amazing General Evaluation caught and included specific tidbits from each individual to add humour, summarize, and highlight some of the smaller ‘sparkly bits’ of the evening. He also made some excellent constructive suggestions.”

“I loved our Guests’ enjoyment of the use of humour and stories in our group. One guest even commented: “There were so many wonderful and entertaining stories, I forgot I was at a Toastmasters meeting!”

Please join us next Monday June 18th to once again lift yourselves out of your cares and worries of the day, to ‘find yourselves energized by the end of the meeting’ to the point that you might even ‘forget you were at a Toastmasters meeting!’ smiley. Looking forward to seeing you, and of course all guests are welcome.
