HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

May 28th, 2007

A Guest wrote “I liked the feeling of acceptance, the warmth and fun that I can tell you have at your meetings.” With a club motto of ‘learning through fun and friendship’, those are words we love to hear. “It’s great to see the club growing.” “How wonderful to have our third Induction in as many weeks! and to also have had two of our 4 guests this night apply for membership smiley”.

“Kate as Chairman was bright, bubbly, and – as always – fun,” and “full of enthusiasm!” “Her bridging between speakers was amazing.”

“I enjoyed Elena as our Wordsmith. She sometimes has a deadpan, off hand humour that never fails to tickle us.” “I liked her Word (contrive) and was pleased with the challenge of ‘contriving’ contexts in which to use it! In her Wordsmith report, she captured some excellent comic phrases, leaving us with a hearty giggle.”

“I enjoyed Atta’s introduction and final report as Wizard of Ahs. His humility and humour made me laugh.” “This was a first: ‘and just to add a little fun … we charge you a fine!”

“What a great Inspiration!” “Anne Marie told us of a personal epiphany which became also a universal inspiration when she asked us at the end, “When in your life are you just ‘phoning it in’. Definitely food for thought…”
“Dave A’s humour and ease in his role as Timer helped move the evening along.” “His introduction of this role was unique and interesting.” “Particularly got a kick out of ‘these fun gadgets that I get to play with’, and ‘we appreciate your extended enthusiasm but if you go overtime I will have to ring the bell’.”

“Very interesting format for Table Topics.” “I thought Dave S. as Table Topics Master was outstanding.” “He had great bridging and encouragement. He was a friendly heckler in coercing the members up to the lectern; yet another example of how a little humour goes a long way!” “Well contrived and flexible Table Topics allowed for some fabulous techno-rants! Great fun! ” “I enjoyed the humorous Table Topics.” The Table Topics Speakers were Highlighted, too: “Dave F’s incredibly understated sense of humour re domestic technology.” “When Pam spoke about her ever so familiar love / hate relationship with the computer, I thought she was channeling me.” “The topic about her enthusiastic yet conflicted relationship with her computer was humorous and touched a chord. Her love / hate relationship with the internet was echoed by Sutomi’s topic, which revealed the struggle to prioritize and save time in our technologically endowed world.” “I laughed at Anne Marie’s nicknames!” “They were a hoot!” “The topic on her husband’s over-use of cell phones was highly comedic!” “Nahid made me laugh .. half hysterically, half sympathetically .. with her humorous tirade about kitchen pots and their unstackable lids. Well done, Nahid!” “Newest member, Delene’s, topic about how the internet has changed this world was intriguing. I hope we will learn more about her expeditions in her Ice Breaker speech.” “Li Ying gave very positive and reinforcing evaluations for the speakers, and as she often does, she ended on a humorous note.”

“For a first time Toastmaster Hilary did a pretty good job smiley”. “She gave a very inspirational Toast!” “I was very impressed with Hilary’s first attempt at Toastmaster. Her Toast was very well done, and by not using notes she came in front of the lectern and directly connected with us.” “The speeches were wonderful and amazing effort and preparation were evident.” “Christine’s speech was exceptionally moving.,” “it touched my heart.” “A unique highlight that will remain with me for the week (at least!) were Christine’s thought-provoking statements in her speech i.e. ‘the poor are a gift to us’ and ‘affluence steals from us.’” “This speech was a wake up call, this story about a village in Uganda! Thanks Christine for reminding me to be grateful! ‘You are loved for who you are’ – I loved this quote!” “Her speech provided, once again, some great insights into community and joy.” “Jill presented her speech so well that I felt I was a little kid again listening to a fantastic story.” “Jill’s gently storytelling manner as she recounted the trials of the mother duck was truly enjoyable. The message of her story hit a chord: we often spend our time waiting for a period of time to be over, instead of appreciating it while it lasts.” “I found her confident, composed, and relaxed.” “I appreciated the quick overview of the objectives of Christine’s speech before Karen launched into her well-structured evaluation that included well-worded suggestions. I thought it was ‘just right’.” “In her evaluation of Jill’s speech, Karen used Jill’s descriptions well to enhance her own evaluation.” “I liked her statement to the group that her observations as Evaluator were a reflection of her personal opinions. This is a good reminder to all of us as both evaluators and recipients of evaluations; it also emphasizes how valued our impressions and suggestions are to others.”

As General Evaluator, Neville’s observations that the meeting’s roles were largely filled by first-timers was a Highlight because it gave all participants a hearty pat on the back. Thanks for that, Neville!” “His recognition of the challenges of some of the smaller jobs was very observant and helped recognize participants in those roles this evening smiley”.
“Once again – The positive feedback from our Guests was a positive closing note to the evening.”

Please Note – Our next meeting will be held on Monday June 4th – we are looking forward to seeing all our members, and of course Guests will be most welcomed.
