HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

March 12th, 2007

“Jill’s chairing was so positive.” “Her fun opening comments created the warm, relaxed atmosphere which sustained us through the whole evening.” “I loved the way she was able to improvise with the water pump that was sitting in the foyer of the meeting hall and use it to open her talk about inventions (the theme), from old to new, which have helped us to bring water into our homes.” “I found Jill’s opening commentary intriguing and delivered with energy, enthusiasm, and with pertinent information about the theme. She helped to introduce the whole concept of invention to us in an intriguing, thoughtful, and incisive manner. She gave a convincing synopsis of the theme and made us consider it in different ways.”
“She asked all of the people she had to introduce which invention was their favorite. The answers, ranging from indoor heating to zippers and knapsacks, were intriguing and thought-provoking.” “Jill’s good bridging and lighthearted role as Chairman helped ‘make’ my evening.”

“I always enjoy Jan’s self-deprecating style.” “I loved his choice of infallible as our Word of the Evening, it fitted the theme and people began to use it right away.”

“Good job by Karen.” “Her Inspiration was delivered very well”. This was about “encouraging us to be positive and to ‘nurture great thoughts’.” “It further sustained the positive tone that was created at the very beginning of the meeting.”

“Dave F. is a master at knowing just how long to use the suspenseful pause before hitting us with a punchline.” “His excellent joke reiterated the sad truths about office jobs: employees dreaming about escape, and managers curtailing it!” “It was excellently entertaining, proven by the positive reaction it elicited!”

“Anne Marie’s listening skills are pretty sharp, and her report of our many ‘ah’s’ showed thoroughness.” “I loved her memorable critique of a fellow Toastmaster’s dramatic hand gestures, as if this speaker is ‘sending energy shooting off in all directions’.”

“The Table Topics session was the Highlight of the evening for me; upbeat and well paced.” “Wendy had a great presence and performed her role with skill and aplomb!” “She provided questions that were just right, difficult enough to be challenging but not so difficult that people were stumped.” “I felt the questions Wendy asked really lent themselves to good discussion.” “The Topics were excellent: brief, well prepared, clearly understood and well-answered by all.” They were also described as “creative, imaginative, innovative, and thought-provoking.” “They really showed a rich variety of interesting concepts and scenarios.” “The Speakers were well bridged in between.” Dave F.’s Topic –‘ What / who do you need to surround yourself with as an inventor’ was a great thinking question.” “I liked Dave’s use of gestures when explaining technical details of a slug torture device.” “Jim’s Table Topic was full of good examples with regard to energy sources. Neville’s was masterful in the bridging used. Very effective use of this wonderful technique!” “Jan’s Table Topic was enthusiastically presented.” Anne Marie’s fluent, Award-Winning answer to the Topic ‘Name the important characteristics for a successful inventor.’ was for this person to have perseverance and a great imagination’.
“Kate’s evaluation of the Table Topic speakers was delivered with tremendous exuberance and a strong presence that made her comments and suggestions for improvement better still. She’s fast, but effective. Congratulations to her!”

“Stuart was well prepared for his Toastmaster role as ‘Toast Maker, and Speaker Introducer.” “First Christine gave a delightful and empowering speech about running her business, and Pam followed with a fabulous delivery of the read play. Both outstanding!” “Christine’s speech was heartfelt and met the objectives very nicely. She used few notes, and she was strongly appealing in her warm, natural speaking style. She did well.” “Her speech was inspirational for me: it was good to learn that a successful company can remain ‘ground roots’ level and personal after 35 years in business. Most of all I really enjoyed reveling in the textures in her speech; her descriptions of lace and silk.” “The passion Christine has for her work simply glowed through the sensual descriptions we heard of her materials, and the personal relationships she has with all her workers who have become a part of her extended family.” “I liked Pam’s speech as she made excellent, skilled and entertaining use of different voices for dramatic intensity and tension. She knows how to use her vocal variety and her naturally spunky nature to genuine effect in an animated, dynamic presentation.” “This dramatic delivery of a multi-character play was outstanding. I loved the choice of her material and her obviously careful editing. A highlight for me in this speech was her excellent ability to show a wide range of emotion.” “It was entertaining and kept the audience’s curiosity from the beginning to the almost end.” “…a fabulous job of a hard play”; “…really interesting, difficult & well done!”
I liked Li Ying’s thorough, balanced and effective evaluation of Christine’s performance. She is known in our club as a terrific listener and makes masterful use of the sandwich technique. A seasoned evaluator!” “Neville’s evaluation of Pam was well-rounded and covered all the essential points of the project.” “I felt he dissected Pam’s speech with accuracy.”

“Don’s General Evaluation was a Highlight for me – so positive!” “It covered all the bases and humour was interspersed to add levity at various points. He began with the second half of the meeting for variety – a nice break from the usual routine!”

“The positive glow I feel upon arriving, and at the end of each Toastmaster meeting makes Monday evenings something I look forward to.” “A very good meeting overall!!”

Please Note: The next meeting will be a Variation From The Norm. Our Next Meeting – Monday March 19th - will be a special treat: our Club Speech & Evaluation Contests. Please join us for this evening of fun and entertainment. Guests are always welcome. smiley
