HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

March 5th, 2007

Thank you to our Guests for their encouraging Highlights: “The welcoming atmosphere upon coming was indicative of the supporting atmosphere throughout.” “Good ambiance and friendly audience.”
“It was nice to have so many guests tonight, as variety is something we cherish in attendance at our club.”

“Neville Chaired the meeting using humour to good effect! His commentary was insightful and incisive in the remarks, personal observations and thoughtful analysis of the whole concept of uniqueness, ‘unique’ being an intriguing theme. Uniqueness is what we all have in common indeed! That he clearly prepared thoroughly for the role was evident in the sincere and succinct introductions.” “He gave us a great set-up for the theme.” “Good bridging, too!”

“We had a great and inimitable Wordsmith / Grammarian.” “Anne Marie’s well-chosen Word, ‘inimitable’, was frequently used. I enjoyed the specific examples in her Wordsmith’s report.” “The report at the end of the evening was excellent, proving that she was attentively listening and involved. I was also impressed with her clear explanation of the roles she was performing.” “One point to be noted: Grammar is corrected whenever possible (just ask Stuart!). One of the best ways I’ve seen this done is not to name the person who made the mistake, but to instead just say “I heard _______ tonight, and of course a more correct way to say it might be____. I personally didn’t hear any flagrant faux pas in grammar tonight, though. smiley

“A truly inspiring Inspiration by Elena. I appreciated her encouragement to risk our own perception of unpopularity and to ignore fear in order to express our true individuality.” “Her Inspiration was clearly delivered with strong conviction and earnestness. It helped to set the appropriate mood for the meeting with the direct correlation to the theme and some interesting, insightful reflections that showed considerable thought and inspirational value!” “The Inspiration really resonated for me and made me think.” “Her Inspiration about the uniqueness of people had great pauses and intonation. Dare to be different!” “It was an authentic, well presented Inspiration.”

“Don’s Joke was rhythmic and elicited a favourable response from us all.” “I could see the Jokemaster’s idea coming but couldn’t put the punch line together. Good job!”

“The Wizard of Ah’s gave an excellent explanation of her role. Karen’s ruthlessness was evident in her very detailed report (and collection of fines!) at the end of the evening.” “Ruthless, but appreciatively efficient!” “Her listening skills are sharp indeed!”

“Our high energy Table Topics session was very capably hosted by Kate.” General consensus: “Her Table Topics were great!” “I loved all the questions posed to us all.” “Topics were open-ended, innovative, personalized, and their vividly imaginative nature made them relatively easy to handle,” while at the same time, “all posed unique challenges to the Speakers.” “We needed that challenge.” “She used xcellent bridging, and was very encouraging to our guests. Very well done.”
“All the candidates spoke with a fairly high degree of comfort, knowledge, and dynamic qualities as they conveyed their personal perspectives on the theme.” “We could all relate to our guest, Nahid, when she said “I don’t know what I am going to say, but I will go up there and find out smiley” “Really enjoyed the passion and sincerity Pam expressed in her Table Topic about her involvement in the Special Olympics during her years in Kitimat.” “Liked Karen’s sincere, relaxed and anecdotal speech about being able to “be oneself” and to be comfortable in one’s own skin.” “Loved Elena’s cautionary Table Topic as to why it’s a good thing that we all don’t think the same way!” “Her Table Topic had great pacing, and especially good voice projection!!” In fact, Elena and Karen are to be congratulated on tying for the coveted Best Table Topic ribbon tonight smiley

“The Table Topic Evaluation by Hilary was excellent, even more so when we were surprised to learn that it was the first time she has done an Evaluation role.” “She did an inimitable job.” “Superb evaluation of Table Topics: her humour, honesty and sincerity make her a rising star smiley” “Her Evaluation was very thorough, all-inclusive, and well sandwiched.” “She really knew how to use her sense of humour without laughing herself.” “Well done, Hilary!”

“I liked Jill’s Toast – Hooray for the under-appreciated artists!” “Thanks to Jill, the Toast was brief and to the point, which we gratefully needed to get the meeting back on track after an extended Break.” “Her succinct Toast led very nicely to the formal portion of our meeting.”

“Both Speakers tonight were magnificent! Jan’s story was very personal, and Li-Ying’s vocal variety was great. I felt as if I were listening to one of the books on tape recorded by a professional speaker / artist.” “Li Ying is a very good storyteller, enthusiastic and dynamic, and her story was interesting from the very beginning. I am inspired to one day give a speech like that.” “She performed her ‘Read Out Loud’ project with ease, comfort, self-assurance and the skills that she’s learned as an experienced member.” “Jan’s speech was one of my Highlights!” “It showed a seasoned veteran in action! We all felt strongly included in his narrative of an oceanic disaster in which he was personally involved in solving.” “It was full of suspense; the Opening was great!” “This speech was a vivid picture of the past. He used his chart very well to explain what happened, and his memory was great.”
“Stuart is becoming a good Evaluator. His evaluation of Jan was well done; even an improvement. He is getting good at these.” “I very much enjoyed Don’s evaluation of Li Ying’s prepared reading. It was also very instructive to those of us who have yet to tackle a prepared reading from a story, novel, or poem.” “He covered all the key points and was very professional. Good, experienced use of the sandwich technique.” “We always learn something from his evaluations.” And he himself learned that his evaluation won the Best Evaluator ribbon for this effort smiley

Yes, we were running a bit behind tonight. As you’ve already read, Jill did her best to set us straight, and Jim ‘iced the cake’! “Jim’s General Evaluation was the fastest and most effectively compact I’ve heard in a long, long time! Congratulations.” “Knowing the meeting was running a little behind schedule he pulled out every skill he has in order to capsulize an extraordinary General Evaluation into 3 ½ (instead of the usual 7 – 10) minutes. It takes experience and confidence to take this step and I, for one, am very grateful to him for doing his best to get the meeting back on track.” “As usual, I loved the humour, pep and efficiency of Jim’s General Evaluation. It capped off the evening beautifully!”

Our next Evening of Entertainment while ‘Learning through Fun and Friendship’ will be next Monday March 12th starting at 7:15 sharp. The theme will be “Invention”. Don’t miss it – it is bound to be a good one. Looking forward to seeing more guests in our midst.  smiley
