Stuart Manning was ‘in great form’ as the evening’s chairman,
and his choice of theme, Regeneration, the catalyst for a very
successful meeting of 15 members and 4 guests. In the long and
sometimes dreary days of midwinter, it was an appropriate
choice. Not only was it uplifting, but it readily allowed
participants to weave that theme into their roles. That it was
thoroughly enjoyed is evidenced by the large number of comments
…….
Omar’s inspiration drew several praiseworthy comments…….‘very
thought-provoking’…….. ‘a thoughtful reminder that we can
improve (regenerate) ourselves every day’
Dave Farris’ original word of the day, Morph was well used and
well appreciated….. Dave’s ‘listening skills have improved
immensely’
Hilary, in her usual, refreshing way, broke tradition by giving
us ‘two jokes for the price of one’
After a hiatus that was much too long, Ed Eduljee graced our
meeting with his presence and immediately took on the role of
Wizard of Ahhs. He certainly has not lost his touch and because
of his diligent listening, Ookpig has put on considerable
weight. ‘Ed’s self-deprecating humour made his report memorable’
On Tabletopics….. Jim ‘uses humour to effect and has a grounded,
yet very dynamic, enthusiastic presence’…… ‘Jim injected a lot
of challenges and fun into tonight’s meeting’……. ‘We need this
kind of challenge from time to time’………’really liked his
bridging’
The club tabletopics contestants were almost upstaged by one of
our four guests. Tanya Lang, first-timer, gave our eventual
winner, Wendy Trusler, a formidable challenge for possession of
the coveted tabletopics ribbon ………’very brave and very effective
for a guest’….. ‘she made a conscientious, enthusiastic attempt
to tackle a difficult, challenging topic’. Neville Cohen
followed up with ‘an excellent review’…..’thorough and
instructive’….
In the second half of the evening, Toastmaster Jan Furst
delighted us with his enthusiastic and ‘thought-provoking’ toast
to Regeneration……..’a great job’………
Elma’s speech about a high level badminton tournament in
Indonesia was ‘so full of vivid imagery you could feel the heat
and humidity’……’loved the humour’….
The Elephant Whisperer also drew the following reviews……’real
conviction….intriguing….’wonderfully descriptive….’great
structure and flow’…..’good props’.
Judging from the sheer number of comments was Li-Ying’s General
Evaluation. ‘Congratulations to Li-Ying for winning Best
Evaluator ribbon – she deserved it’……’comprehensive’…’really
used the sandwich technique effectively’…….’her logical,
methodical and professional approach is very instructive……..’
It was a great meeting to showcase what our club is all about
(learning through fun and friendship) and was obviously not lost
on the guests……’The encouragement and warm welcome were
wonderful for a first timer…..’made to feel welcome’…….I liked
how there was so much support in the room for each other,
providing safety for the constructive feedback’
All in all, a positive and regenerating meeting.
Please note that next week’s get-together will be a dinner
meeting at Cheers Restaurant (near 2nd and Lonsdale) starting at
6:30. As usual, guests are always welcome.
