HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

January 22nd, 2007

This meeting, themed “Creativity”, resonated with entertainment, and the admirable performances of members who took the challenge of practicing new roles for the very first time.

The hands-down most lauded participant of the evening was Jim, who creatively wove good suggestions into a highly humorous evaluation of Neville’s speech. To top it all off, he even walked away with both of the awards at the end of the meeting – the Best Evaluator, and also the Best Table Topics Speaker!
“Jim’s evaluation of Neville’s speech was one of the real highlights of the meeting. His use of humour in all the roles he takes on at the club is one of the reasons he rightfully deserved the two ribbons he received for his two performances tonight.”
“Jim’s amazingly entertaining evaluation of Neville’s speech was a fabulous and humourous performance, as well as an insightful and constructive tool.”
“Jim’s evaluation had humour once again!!” “Jim’s evaluation was very humorous (as always).”
“Jim’s vision of Neville in tights was memorable! Was this a ‘highlight’? or more of a ‘lowlight’ smiley” “Jim’s evaluation of Neville was detailed, thorough, and it had good humour.”
And Neville wrote: “A Highlight for me was Jim’s evaluation of my speech.”

Both of the Speakers were highlighted as well, for their entertaining, creative, and informative impact:
“A very entertaining set of speeches! … by Dave S. and Neville.”
Appreciative, complimentary praise from Jan: “Both Speakers spoke so clearly that even I could hear them.”
“Dave S.’s excellent, interesting and highly-informative speech on container shipping and its origins was a Highlight. My favorite element of this speech was the suggestion that containers could be used as dwelling places – something I might consider if Vancouver housing prices keep rising!! smiley
“Dave’s speech was a definite change of pace for our club! He delivered a technical, logical, topical and informative speech in an entertaining, educational, and convincing manner.”
“Most impressive was Dave S.’s commentary as he set up for his speech – a pro! I personally found his content very interesting.”
“Neville’s speech was an entertaining story!”
“Picturing Neville in tights as a male ballerina was undeniably one of the highlights!”

Praise and compliments for “The Firsts”, Elena, Kate, Hilary, and Elma. Well done all.”

“Elena was quite comfortable and self-confident in her debut as Table Topic Master. The topics were all directly correlated to the theme, posed challenges to the participants, and showed a high degree of imagination and innovation. People responded favorably and gave intriguing, enthusiastic, at times funny, and always sincere and thoughtful answers,”
“It was difficult to tell that it was the first time Elena had performed the role of Table Topics Master. She was so well organized, and even confident enough to bridge between speakers.”
“Elena’s thoughtful and challenging Table Topics were a Highlight. Excellent job – especially as a first-timer in this role – full bridging.”
“Elena had great Table Topics for the speakers; great bridging for the first time.”
“Elena’s topics as Table Topic Master were very creative.”
“I was particularly impressed with Elena’s excellent introduction to Table Topics for the benefit of our guests: sincere and honest, yet positive and encouraging.”
Individual Table Topic Speakers Highlighted:
“Jan’s Table Topic was a Highlight for me!”
“Jan’s Table Topic was an ideal example of how it should be done.”
“Hilary’s confidence as a new speaker was impressive to me.”
“I liked Dave F.’s example of the excuse for not attending work: ‘anal glaucoma!!!’”
An anonymous new member wrote: “Memorable for me was the challenge of taking on a new role and still being asked to participate in Table Topics as well.”

“One of my Highlights was first-timer Kate’s Table Topic Evaluation.”
“Kate’s evaluation was very thorough; always positive yet constructive!”
“Kate’s evaluation was thorough, lively, and delivered with conviction and expertise. The ‘sandwich technique’ was used to good effect.”

“Hilary – the Timer – was very responsible and did a great job.”
“The role of Timer isn’t easy. New member, Hilary, didn’t get caught in any of the common traps. She was even diligent about ringing the bell for over-timers.”
“Excellent use of the bell by a new member as Timer.”
“Highlight Hilary’s ‘Ruthlessness’ as a Timer – I’m envious of her confidence.”

“Elma was relaxed and confident as Toastmaster, although this is the first time she has been in this role.”
“Elma was self-assured and had good composure throughout. She used bridging well. I appreciated the fact that she explained the role of the two kinds of manuals for the benefit of guests in our midst.

Returning to comments on the more experienced participants:
“Jill was great in her role of the Chairman.”
“Jill’s introduction was a little long, but she brought up some interesting questions.”
“Jill was vibrant, enthusiastic, innovative, in her introductory remarks about the theme. She truly gave a professional, personalized, and sincere performance. She addressed changes in the agenda immediately and was effective in her bridging between speakers.”

“I liked Pam’s excellent evaluation – picking up not only the positive and negatives but also pointed out the hazards others face using Power Point.”
“Pam’s evaluation of Dave was superb and covered all the essentials.”

“Don’s General Evaluation was excellent. He had very good use of the sandwich technique and real help for speakers.”
“Don is Highlighted for his excellent constructive criticisms and suggestions.”

“I loved Dave F.’s Inspiration. The phrase “resurrect the passion” was great!”

“I’d Highlight the whole meeting because it was an ‘Upper’ for me!”

Let’s make the next meeting an ‘upper’, too! Same time, same place, Guests are always welcome – they just make it even better. smiley
