We had a room full of enthusiastic members and guests,
optimistic about the evening and even more optimistic about the
coming Toastmaster year. It was an auspicious beginning.
There were a number of notable Highlights. For instance, the
first thing you would have noticed was the extra boost of energy
that the large number of guests brought to the meeting. The fact
that they helped to swell the audience, and even volunteered to
participate, were welcomed boosts as well!
Our new President, Omar Hung, opened the meeting with an
optimistic forecast for the year. He reminded us that we ended
last year on a high note, and assured us that this year will be
even better
Karen Arnold inspired us to help keep our bodies healthier
simply by monitoring our mental attitudes. She gave us
practical, easy-to-implement thoughts on how to do this. After
all, for example, wouldn’t life be better if we woke up every
morning deliberately deciding “to have a blissful day”?
The Table Topics Session, too, was a definite highlight this
evening. Jim Sinclair’s topics were easy to speak to and so well
framed that even the guests who were brave enough to volunteer
had no trouble using their 1½ minutes! In fact our guest, Louise
Williams, won the Best Table Topics Speaker ribbon.
Wendy Trusler finally broke the ice with her first speech
project “The Ice Breaker”! This was well worth waiting for, too.
We were drawn to her friendly, easy-going manner as she took us
on a descriptive tour of the “Circle Route”; the career route
that has filled her life with memorable experiences and
opportunities. The ice has been broken, Wendy … now we can’t
wait to hear more!
Without a doubt, this meeting was a happy memory and an
excellent start. What you have read above is just a sample of
it. Even after such a long break, every single member was ‘on’.
Hopefully you were there to be a part of the whole thing…
Dear Readers,
As you have probably noticed, Highlights is changing its format
this year. It began as literally highlighting only the most
memorable moments of the meetings. Somehow it grew into a much
more detailed and time-consuming report. It is time to revert to
the original meeting recap we intended this to be. You may find
in the future that many of them are even much shorter than the
one above. We are hoping that either someone from the club will
volunteer to write this column, or that volunteers will offer to
take turns writing it. Please let me know. We welcome everyone’s
feedback on this change – pro or con - we would appreciate it.
Pam
