North Shore Toastmasters Club Meeting
December 6th, 2004
As Wilma Atchison so aptly put
it, “Li Ying Kao was the ‘glue’ that made this meeting such a
success”. She arrived not only well prepared to perform her own
role as Chairman of the meeting, but she also came well prepared
to do any other role that might be needed at the last minute.
When no one rose to give an impromptu Inspiration, Li Ying ‘just
happened’ to have an inspiring, poignant little story to tell
us. The Theme she had chosen was Mottos, which turned out to be
a great success with everyone. She had done her homework and had
asked everyone she was to introduce about their personal mottos,
later easily weaving these into Table Topics for each
individual. In other words, our Chairman this evening was
completely unflappable because she had every aspect of the
meeting cheerfully under control.
Jill McCormick’s Word for the evening, “Meander” was certainly a
good one for people who like to talk! We did our best not to
meander onto sidetracks, but some of us definitely got caught
We were caught with our ‘Ums and Ahs’ this meeting as well. Jill
definitely did not miss a trick.
Wilma very effectively used a more unconventional approach to
her Table Topic Evaluation this time, and it worked very well.
She found that many of the suggestions she had for us were so
similar that she told us about them in general terms, while
telling each individual what she felt their strengths had been.
Kent Elliott, a visitor from the Cloverleaf club, chaired the
Toastmaster’s role with the expertise of a seasoned Toastmaster,
even graciously rolling with the punches when we found we had a
few extra minutes to allow Neville Cohen elaborate a little
further on his experiences at the Fall Toastmaster Conference
this year.
Jenny Ji, a visitor from the SpeakerHub club, came to give a
different perspective as a Speech Evaluator. It can be
refreshing to have someone from outside a club give evaluations
from time to time. Every evaluator uses different language and
methods to describe their points of view. Consequently we often
pick up new things and learn from each other.
Don’t forget …the next meeting, December 13th will be our
Christmas Dinner. It will be held at Cheers Restaurant (on East
2nd St. just off Lonsdale in N. Vancouver).
We gather at 6:30 for a social get together, and the
meeting/dinner begins at 7 p.m.
We are looking forward to seeing you all there.
