North Shore Toastmasters Club Meeting
November 22nd, 2004
Our Guests this evening must
have felt relaxed and comfortable with Chairman, Jill McCormick,
leading us through our paces.
The Table Topics session chaired by Neville Cohen was one of the
highlights of the meeting. The Theme was “The End Holds the
Beginning”, and Neville used this for his unique approach to our
impromptu speeches. We were given the final sentence of our
mini- speeches, and we had to come up with a beginning and body
that would lead to it! Some said it seemed to be one of the more
difficult sessions in which they had participated, but
absolutely everyone rose to the challenge, as did Wilma Atchison
when she admirably evaluated them.
Still on admirable jobs…Kathryn Kennedy set one of the best
examples of a good Toastmaster: An excellent Toast, and
introductions which were well prepared and personal, relaxing
the Speakers, and enticing the audience so that they eagerly
looked forward to hearing them.
When we hear speeches based on his advanced manual, “Speaking to
Inform”, Gil Hardman is educating us about the very interesting
work he did before retiring. As president of large corporations
he visualized towns around the world, and then made them
happen…right down to the downtowns, neighbourhoods, parks, golf
courses, shopping centers, etc. In the Vancouver area we know he
designed & developed the Guilford Town Centre, Annacis
Industrial Estate (when he was 28 years old) & other projects.
In Hawaii he initiated & planned major resort destination areas
including Wailea, Maui & Kona, Hawaii.
The object of Pam Elliott’s speech project was to ‘warm up the
audience with a personalized humorous story that appropriately
leads into the theme of the ‘real’ speech. Pam’s story was
actually a true one but she wants you to know that the lady was
not really her aunt!
Gerhard Rentsch kept us in suspense throughout his story, to win
Best Table Topics award. Though Li Ying Kao and Wilma gave him a
good run for his money, Dave Stewart, a tough and exacting, yet
motivating General Evaluator won the award for Best Evaluator.
Be sure to join us for more Fun and Friendship next Monday,
Nov.29th.
