North Shore Toastmasters Club Halloween
Dinner Meeting
November 1st, 2004
From the introduction of the
guests to Stuart’s one-liners that concluded the evening, we
were having our share of laughter – good for the soul, and any
other souls listening in on All Saints Day night. The meeting
was controlled by two ‘witches’, so it is no wonder the spell of
Halloween prevailed.
Under the spreading disguise of a witch, our Chairman, Li Ying
Kao’s poise and preparation smoothly led us through the meeting.
She had asked her team about their first costumes. ie. we are
still trying to picture Dave Stewart as a ‘bag of groceries’ … ?
Gil Hardman’s Halloween Table Topics were well researched and a
lot of fun. Pam managed to sneak the best Table Topic ribbon as
she used her super natural powers with a twist to avoid the
mysterious footsteps that were following her.
Stuart was in top form as the Table Topics Evaluator. Relaxed
and easy in his delivery, he gave us a well balanced report.
Both of the formal Speakers had obvious fun with our theme based
speeches:
First Neville Cohen inspired us with historical and other
interesting facts about Halloween. Later, Jill McCormick had a
great deal of fun as she set her listeners on the edges of their
chairs with her spooky story.
Congratulations go to Neville Cohen on completing his first
manual. He has now achieved his Competent Toastmaster (CTM)
award and is ready to tackle the wide variety of Advanced
Manuals.
We had a husband and wife team Kathryn Kennedy and Gil Hardman,
evaluating the Speakers – ‘a family affair’, and they did an
excellent job. As Jill said, “Who better to evaluate a
storyteller than an enviable consummate storyteller himself?”
Another husband and wife team were ‘the other witch’, Pam
Elliott as Toastmaster, and Kent Elliott (from Cloverleaf Club),
who won the ribbon as General Evaluator.
A number of our spouses joined us for this dinner. We always
enjoy our evenings with them, and we particularly appreciated
and applauded their participation in this meeting – they added
that extra little bit of sparkle to the night.
Speaking of ‘sparkle’ … we were delighted to have a former
member who never fails to inspire us in many ways … Jan Khubyar.
Jan has always been exceptionally creative, and she certainly
didn’t let us down this year. Jan played the part of a ‘paper
pusher’ (you had to have been there!) to the hilt!!
As you may have guessed by now, we had an exhilarating meeting
and look forward to seeing everyone back in our usual meeting
room November 8th for more fun.
