Everyone has an all time favorite book or story and from the
members’ responses, the Theme of “Books and Storytime” was an
all time favorite, too! So many interesting books were
mentioned, ranging from children’s stories, to adult fiction, to
self-help, that many of us were busy making summer reading
lists!!
People were quick in responding to the Chairman’s introductory
question: “What was your all time favorite children’s book or
story?” Believe it or not, of all the introductions there were
no two alike.
Participants who were particularly on topic were our Table
Topics Master, Jill McCormick, and our Inspirator, Anne Marie
Deluise. We were inspired by author J. K. Rowling’s rise ‘from
welfare to millionaire’ to not put off for another minute our
own creative dreams, while “Pick me!!” was the feeling around
the room as the Table Topic speakers were randomly chosen. We
heard opinions ranging from our favored section of the library,
to best loved books, to what makes a good storyteller. Jim
Sinclair was voted Best Table Topic Speaker with his reply to
‘Have computers replaced books for the new generation?’
Omar Hung enthusiastically launched into the story of the
origins of Zongi – the popular Chinese rice dumpling – and the
integrity of the man for whom it was named. The Dragon Boat
Festival is coming soon, and Zongi is one of the most prized
foods served at this fun community event. Neville Cohen
evaluated this presentation, after which Gerhard Rentsch
expressed his appreciation to Omar for such an interesting
story.
Gerhard’s Toast was also an interesting story – this time, a
musical one (picture classical music in Burger King?) which
ended with “Music is everywhere in our lives, soothing us,
comforting us, inspiring us, helping us, uplifting us arousing
us, calming us …” and a Toast to Viva la Musica!
There were, yet again, a number of “Firsts”:
Simon Russell rubbed his hands together as he introduced
‘gleeful’ as the Word of the evening. It was an excellent
choice, ensuring the lighthearted mood of our theme. It worked!
Veronica Marshall was very comfortable in her role as Ah
Counter. She ‘gleefully’ informed us that her favorite childhood
character, Paddington Bear, loved saving money and she was going
to do her best this night to raise the club’s bank balance
Unlike most new members, Jen Reed-Lewis did not rely on the Club
Roles script to describe her role as Timer. Incorporated into
her explanation (which included this original ‘amber moves us
forward towards our conclusion’), was the well aimed quote: “He
who has nothing else, has time.” Jen spent her time keeping us
right on track.
A surprise for us all as a First Timer was long time member,
Ruth Sol’s confession that she had never before been our General
Evaluator. There are not many who are more capable of performing
this teaching role and it is amazing to realize how long we have
missed this opportunity. It was not at all surprising to hear
that she had been voted the award of Best Evaluator
The Table Topics Evaluator, Li Ying Kao, was tapped on the
shoulder just before the meeting began and asked to fill this
role for us. Using Don Ekroth’s ‘I’d be delighted’, and knowing
she has the excellent skills to do it, Li once again set an
example for us.
Jim Sinclair’s jokes just get better and better. Jill McCormick
even told this one to her doctor the next day – and got one back
which she may share next week! Nice legs, Jim
Yes, indeed … Everyone has all time favorite books and stories
and we spent a wonderful evening mutually sharing some of them.
See you next week – Monday June 20th. Guests are always most
welcome to come.
