HIGHLIGHTS

North Shore Toastmasters     t Club Meeting

March 28th, 2005

We hope you all have had an enjoyable Spring Break smiley Our numbers, diminished by the holiday this week, actually induced a more intimate and informal gathering.

Helping to set this atmosphere was Chairman, Gerhard Rentsch, who General Evaluator Dave Stewart described as having earned an ‘A’ in the three ‘C’s: Comfortably in Control, Competent, and Comfortable. To carry the accolades even further, Gerhard’s bridging between Speakers was definitely admirable, as well.

Hamish Marshall, in performing his first official function for us, was impressively “nice and brief as he introduced the Chairman in a quiet, authoritarian manner” (to once again quote the succinct and on the ball General Evaluator).

As a last minute recruit, Jim Sinclair found he had no trouble delivering an off the cuff, well defined explanation of his role as Wizard of Ahs, even making us laugh as he ruthlessly collected the fines for our ‘word whiskers’.

Another newer member, Veronica Marshall, proved to be very well spoken, and efficient in her first role as the Timer, while Jokester Jan Khubyar had no trouble warming her audience up with Sherlock Holmes and Watson’s ‘extraordinary deduction’!

The every resourceful Li Ying Kao brought a new dimension to Table Topics:
Two little hand-made boxes labeled ‘Seasons’ and ‘Scents’. Each Speaker chose one topic from each box and was asked to ‘use their creativity and imagination to weave the two topics together into a story. Who will forget Jan’s little cottage in the forest with the ‘little people’, or Gerhard’s playboy bunnies?!? In the end there was an unprecedented four-way-tie for winners: Jan, Gerhard, Hamish, and Veronica 
Thoroughly into her role, Li Ying’s bridging was deftly delivered with amusing animation.

Pam Elliott’s dual roles proved to be a bit of a conundrum for her audience because her presentation, based on Mark Chevalier’s “Knicker Elastic is Fantastic!”, explains the importance of time objectives, yet earlier she went overtime in her Table Topic evaluations! (And she won’t be offended because she wrote this!)

Neville Cohen, on the other hand, was not ‘time challenged’ when he evaluated Pam’s presentation. Stuart Manning did an excellent job as Toastmaster with his Toast about spring, encouraging us to have ‘new hopes and new challenges’, and Dave Stewart’s General Evaluation was once again an award winning presentation.

Please join us on Monday April 4th as we host the Area Speech & Evaluation Contests. NOTE the New Time: We will begin at 7 pm sharp so that the people coming over from Bowen Island for this event will be on time for their ferry.
