North Shore Toastmasters Club Meeting
October 18th, 2004
Dave Stewart was the ideal
host to chair this meeting. He set us up by giving his personal
evaluation of the American presidential candidates’ public
speaking abilities (or lack of…).
Although there was no specific theme for the evening, one did
seem to prevail: The importance of using the right words and
gestures to elicit??? understanding and peace both here and
throughout the world.
Our new Area Governor, Jan Furst from Bowen Island, made his
first visit last night. He won our hearts by volunteering to
participate in every aspect of our meeting. We appreciate his
support, and very much look forward to seeing him again.
Gerhard Rentsch chaired an insightful Table Topics session,
using different scenarios to elicit our views of Vancouver
through a visitor’s eyes. One of our guests, Ray Williams, won
the Best Table Topic ribbon.
Shoko Seyadin made her last speech for a while in our club. (She
will be moving to False Creek the end of October and will be
joining a club closer to her new home.) We will surely miss her.
In her speech on ‘Sign Language’ she demonstrated just how far
she has come in both her public speaking and English speaking
abilities. For example, she was not only able to effectively
involve us with audience participation, but also able to
incorporate our ideas later on in her speech! The applause she
received was well deserved.
Gerhard Rentsch had suggested that one way to help raise
awareness of our club, and our membership as well, would be to
hand out posters to every member. We would put these posters up
in places we frequent the most. Every time we go to these places
we should check to see if our posters are still up, and if they
are not then we ask permission to replace them. Pam Elliott
brought a stack of posters to distribute last night. Any members
who were not present will be given them during the next meeting.
Our website is being ‘polished’ – Please check it out, all
feedback welcome.
And, as Don Ekroth would say, “That’s all the news that’s fit to
print!”
