North Shore Toastmasters
Club Meeting
February 1st, 2005
Hats off to everyone who
attended this entertaining and enlightening meeting. Hats off to
our many guests (new and returning), and to all those who
participated in the fun.
Jim Sinclair, our newest member, opened the meeting by
confidently warmly welcoming us all, and introducing the
ever-charming Chairman of the evening, Don Ekroth.
Don chose “Hats” as the theme because he wanted to ensure a
meeting that would invite laughter and creativity. He was not
disappointed. One hat all Toastmasters quickly learn to don is
the hat of resilience. (Resilience was the Word of the Evening
chosen by Wordsmith, Stuart Manning.) However, resilience didn’t
apply to Don this night as his role clicked along like
clockwork.
Li Ying Kao resiliently adapting to the unexpected longer timing
for the Table Topic Evaluators, kept the meeting right on track.
Li Ying is never reluctant to ring the overtime bell, for which
the Speakers and the audience are most grateful.
Jokemaster, Omar Hung, donned a jaunty jester’s hat as he made
us laugh about a very funny personal story
Then Wilma Atchison (suitably ‘hatted’ for Ascot!), appeared
with a magical black bag full of hats for her Table Topic
session. We delighted in the Speakers’ obvious enjoyment that
their particular hats induced. The Best Table Topic award went
to Gil Hardman, who convinced us that no matter how hard he
tried, there is yet to be invented a hat that will fit his
‘oddly shaped’ head! Gil was also a Speaker later in the
program, “Speaking to Inform” us about hypnotism through
descriptive facts and stories.
As did our first Speaker, Ruth Sol, whose entertaining speech
had us laughing at numerous quotes and anecdotes as she
effectively heightened our awareness about just how much PR
people are “Messing with Our Minds”.
Introducing these Speakers was none other than Jan Khubyar –
Toastmaster for the evening. In her own warm and unique way, Jan
Toasted the multi-uses of hats, and introduced the Speakers with
her usual panache!
We were very happy to have, as General Evaluator, a visitor from
a club on Bowen Island. Janet Young is a familiar presence in
our club and we always look forward to seeing her. This time she
won us with the sincerity and humour she used as she described
her thoughts on our performances.
Hats off to the Fun and Friendship that epitomized this night
Join us next Monday (Feb. 7th) when members of the Logos
Toastmasters Club will share our meeting.
