North Shore Toastmasters
Club Meeting
January 17th, 2005
The Theme this evening was
“Freedom” in honour of Martin Luther King. This theme was echoed
with poignancy in Chairman Neville Cohen’s introductory
comments, in his Introductions of people, and in the
Inspiration; in Joyce Soti’s moving Toast as Toastmaster; and in
the touching story Gil Hardman recounted about kindness in the
trenches of war.
The General Evaluator, Don Ekroth, summed up the evening very
nicely:
“It was a vibrant and fun meeting. Everything flowed very well
from Neville’s responsibilities.” As a prepared Chairman,
Neville, arrived ready for any unexpected event, filling in at
the last minute as both Introducer of Guests, and Inspirator.
And he wasn’t the only one who came prepared ‘just in case’ …
Gerhard Rentsch stepped up to the impromptu “Open Mike” to
deliver a very good joke! and Pam Elliott became Table Topic
Evaluator.
We have been fortunate to have had two Inductions in the past
two weeks. Our newest Inductee to Toastmasters, Omar Hung, did
an excellent job of introducing our Chairman - his first
official role as a Toastmaster. Joyce Soti, a three year veteran
of Toastmasters was Inducted as a dual member. From her Toast,
throughout her introductions of the Speakers, she emanated a
contagious energy on which she sailed through her role.
Freedom’s variations and connotations took a much lighter side
throughout our Table Topic Session. Our Table Topics Master,
Jill McCormick, was in her element, and consequently so were her
Speakers. Great fun!
Then our second formal Speaker, Dave Stewart, gave a mirthful
speech about his job as a computer expert at a Help Desk –
telephone prop and all Those of us ‘technically challenged
computerites’ easily related to the humorous situations he faces
every day.
Li Ying Kao won both the Best Table Topic and the Best Evaluator
ribbons – well deserved. The General Evaluator proclaimed that
she has become one of our top Evaluators. “She gives excellent
evaluations, using humour to get her points across.”
Congratulations, Li Ying
Thanks to Ruth Sol’s vigilant eye on the clock, the meeting
ended right on time!
We enjoyed two new Guests this night, and look forward to seeing
them both next week.
NOTE: Next Meeting will be our OPEN HOUSE January 24th. We are
looking forward to welcoming many Guests – this is a perfect
opportunity to come see that we truly do live up to our motto:
Learning through fun and friendship.
