CLUB INFORMATION
This club is the oldest Toastmaster club on
the North Shore – We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in April
2002. Toastmasters began in 1924 in California when the founder,
Ralph Smedley, was working with a group of young men at a YMCA.
He felt they would benefit from more practice in public speaking
and leadership skills and so he formed the first Toastmasters
Club. There are now over 7,500 clubs in countries all over the
world, and there are over 200 clubs in B.C. Women were
officially invited to join Toastmasters in 1973, (although we’ve
heard that some clubs actually had women members before that –
but only their initials and last names appeared on their
application forms to headquarters!).
Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, careers,
cultures, and ages. Because we have new people joining
throughout the year, there is always a wonderful mix of
abilities all the way from brand new, to members who have been
in the club for years. New members are continually enriching the
club with fresh perspectives and experiences.
Every Toastmasters club has its own individual atmosphere and
culture. We have been told we are one of the most welcoming, and
positively encouraging clubs on the North Shore. We invite you
to join us one evening to find this out for yourselves.
We meet every Monday evening from 7:15 - 9:15. Meetings are
usually held at the West Vancouver United Church (2062 Esquimalt
Ave. on the corner of 21st and Esquimalt in West Vancouver – see
map). Occasionally we have dinner meetings which are held in
other locations so it is wise to phone us to be sure you know
where we will be before you come.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
